U.S. Mission to Egypt - Mentor Program for English Educators

Overview

The U.S. Department of State's Embassy Cairo announces an open competition to implement a comprehensive mentor program for Egyptian English language instructors that will strengthen English education capacity throughout Egypt while advancing U.S.-Egypt educational partnerships and cross-cultural understanding. This program addresses a critical need: Egyptian English instructors face limited access to modern pedagogical training, contemporary teaching methodologies, and professional development in areas such as AI-enhanced instruction, critical thinking pedagogy, and differentiated learning approaches. This capacity gap directly impacts Egypt's ability to prepare its youth for participation in the global economy and limits opportunities for meaningful people-to-people exchanges that strengthen bilateral relations.

The program will train 150 Egyptian English language instructors from all governorates across Egypt through an intensive one-week course (56 hours at 8 hours per day) focused on practical applications and best practices in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Core curriculum includes critical thinking strategies for language learning, effective classroom management techniques, supporting learners with different needs and abilities, 21st century skills integration, and AI-enhanced teaching methods and digital literacy. Participants will gain enhanced English language proficiency, develop a nuanced understanding of American culture, and learn the most up-to-date English language teaching methodologies. The program's innovative mentorship component requires each participant to complete 100 hours of documented volunteer work within their communities, providing peer support and guidance to an estimated 1,500+ fellow English teachers across Egypt. This multiplier effect creates sustainable professional learning communities that continue long after the program concludes, representing 35% of total program hours and ensuring lasting impact.

Project Goal: To strengthen English language education capacity throughout Egypt by training a network of 150 mentor-teachers who will enhance the quality of English language instruction in their communities, thereby advancing U.S.-Egypt educational partnerships, fostering cross-cultural understanding, and supporting Egypt's workforce development in alignment with U.S. foreign policy priorities for a safer, stronger, and more prosperous bilateral relationship.

Project Objectives: 
Objective 1: Train 150 Egyptian English language instructors from across all governorates in modern TESOL methodologies, AI-enhanced instruction, classroom management, critical thinking pedagogy, and 21st century skills through an intensive one-week program (56 hours of instruction at 8 hours per day), resulting in at least 85% of participants demonstrating measurable improvement in pedagogical knowledge and teaching competencies through pre- and post-training assessments.

Objective 2: Establish a sustainable mentor-teacher network by requiring each of the 150 trained instructors to complete 100 hours of documented volunteer mentorship within their communities, reaching a minimum of 1,500 fellow English teachers across Egypt within 12 months of completing the training program, thereby creating professional learning communities that continue beyond the program period.

Objective 3: Enhance participants' understanding of American culture and cross-cultural communication through integrated cultural programming during the training week, resulting in at least 90% of participants reporting increased knowledge of American educational values, cultural perspectives, and teaching practices that they can incorporate into their English language instruction.

Objective 4: Build capacity in contemporary educational technologies and methodologies by training all 150 participants in AI usage for English language instruction and digital literacy tools, with at least 80% of participants implementing at least one AI-enhanced teaching technique or digital tool in their classrooms within six months of completing the program.

Project Performance Period: Proposed projects should be completed in 8 months or less. The Department of State will entertain applications for continuation grants funded under these awards beyond the initial budget period on a non-competitive basis subject to availability of funds, satisfactory progress of the program, and a determination that continued funding would be in the best interest of the U.S. Department of State.
Cost Sharing or Matching: Cost sharing or matching is encouraged, but not required for this funding opportunity.
