Future-prooofing human flourishing: The case for a learning sciences benchmark for AI
The EDSAFE AI Alliance and Arizona State University's Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation are proud to release Future-Proofing Human Flourishing: The Case for a Learning Sciences Benchmark for AI. This foundational policy roadmap establishes a rigorous, non-commercial framework designed to audit and evaluate generative AI systems through the lens of the learning sciences and human flourishing rather than mere task replacement and efficiency. The paper advocates building a “yardstick” by evaluating generative AI tools across 15 domains and 3 core pillars: Cognitive Foundations, Pedagogical Design, and Measurement Accountability. Building this benchmark is imperative to ensure that current and future students can use effective, safe, and secure generative AI tools that cultivate learning and human flourishing, prepare them for the workforce, and safeguard our data sovereignty and algorithmic autonomy.
We consider this a working document and are seeking input from the field on what should be evaluated by the benchmark. Feel free to add your feedback or additional thoughts to this linked feedback form.
