State requirements: certification and fingerprinting

Arizona teacher certification

You need to provide the following

  • An Institutional Recommendation (IR)
  • Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP fingerprint clearance card (bring your card)
  • Passing scores on the applicable Arizona Educator Exams (NES or AEPA tests) — the Department of Education should have scores on file, but bring a copy
  • Payment (check or money order payable to ADE) of $30 for each certificate documented on the IR
  • Additional endorsements: English as a Second Language Endorsement ($30 if documented on your IR) or Bilingual Endorsement ($60): 
    • To apply for an ESL endorsement you need proof of completion the foreign language requirement. Check with your MLFTC advisor about the ways you can provide that proof.
    • To apply for the BLE Endorsement, you need proof of passing scores for the Arizona Classroom Spanish Teacher Exam or a letter from your tribe for a Native American language. Provide your MLFTC advisor with your proof.

Arizona Educator Exams (NES or AEPA tests)

Applicable Arizona Educator Exams (NES or AEPA tests) are required for state certification. Refer to Arizona Department of Education - Educator Certification for more detailed information or consult with your Teachers College advisor.

IVP (Identity Verified Print) Fingerprint Clearance Card Information

Arizona State University requires all education students possess an IVP (Identity Verified Print) fingerprint clearance card for their internship or residency (student teaching) while completing their professional program. Non-IVP cards (cards that do not have an IVP number of the card) will not be accepted.  Additional information regarding state requirements can be found at the Arizona Department of Public Safety website https://www.azdps.gov/services/public/fingerprint.

MLFTC program requirements:

  • Undergraduate: Students must possess a valid IVP fingerprint clearance card before the start of Term 5 in order to proceed into the Professional Pathways program.
  • Graduate:  An IVP fingerprint clearance card is required at the time of admission into the MAC or InMAC program.

Options to apply for an IVP fingerprint clearance card:

  • On Campus:  The MLFTC Office of Student Services conducts an on-site fingerprinting event for one day during the first week of each semester on the Tempe campus.  Call the OSS office at 480-965-5555 for the date/time/location for the next IVP fingerprint clearance card event. It takes approximately 4-6 weeks to receive your IVP card in the mail.
