An increased demand for STEM-related skills in the workforce has created a need to better prepare K-12 students in areas such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Reaching students at the K-8 level is critical so that students can develop strong foundational mathematical skills and familiarity with STEM concepts early on in their education. However, traditional methods often fail to engage students or demonstrate the relevance of mathematics to real-world problems, leading to gaps in knowledge and decreased interest in STEM careers. This proposal addresses the need for innovative teaching strategies to improve mathematics education through the use of visual computing lessons.
The approach
The project supports the creation of a ten-week curriculum called Using Visual Computing to Deepen Mathematical Learning aimed at preservice K-8 general and special education teachers. The program will be integrated as part of a newly approved upper-division mathematics course through ASU’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.
