The challenge

The Center for Reinventing Public Education, or CRPE, housed at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, produced a case study in July 2022 on Learning Hubs implemented by The Oakland REACH, a parent-run, parent-led organization addressing education equity and achievement in the Oakland school system. The study looked at the early impact of leveraging the Parent Liberator model to offer academic enrichment programming during the second phase of the COVID pandemic. CRPE identified a need to continue the work with The Oakland REACH to study the impact of the Parent Liberator model, in particular on the parent and community tutors, so that critical elements of the training program can be codified to support sustainability and growth.

The approach

The Oakland REACH Subgrant Liberator Project will be led by Robin Lake, director of CRPE, in conjunction with The Oakland REACH. The goals are to 1) conduct initial research, and 2) develop plans for a deeper experiment focusing on student achievement. A variety of strategies and deliverables will move information to the field quickly, including:

1) Publishing accessible and actionable insights via The Lens, CRPE’s in-house blog, to surface stories from liberators and highlight key takeaways from data analysis.

2) A report synthesizing lessons learned from researching the impact of the Parent Liberator model.

3) A plan for a deeper experiment exploring the impact of the Parent Liberator model on student learning.
