Designing AI mentors

AI learning design mentors
September 19, 2025

When ChatGPT was first released, faculty with ASU's Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation saw an opportunity — not to replace proven and effective learning models, but to leverage and design tools that can enhance the student experience.

As part of the college's Learning Futures Collaboratives initiative, Steve Salik, a faculty member in the Learning Design and Technologies, MEd program, also saw a chance to encourage students in the program to learn by using AI mentors in ways that they might in turn inform their own approaches to learning design. He helped launch an innovative approach: AI mentors.

These digital partners are designed to enhance and personalize the student experience. They have been developed to reflect the knowledge base of instructional experts, and they are being used to supplement instruction, not replace it, and to challenge students in the program to better understand how such tools may be applied to the learning design environment.

Salik is part of MLFC's AI in Education collaborative, and the project is one example of how MLFC's Learning Futures Collaboratives are bridging research and application. Learn more from Salik about the project in this video:
