Founded in 1988 by Regents Professor Gene V Glass and first led by Executive Editor Leslie Poynor, Current Issues in Education, or CIE, is an open access, peer-reviewed academic education journal produced by Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College doctoral students. Regents Professor Emeritus and Research Professor David Berliner, Glass and Professor James A. Middleton were the founding faculty advisors.

This year, the journal reached a milestone as it celebrated its 25th anniversary. One of the few student-led academic journals in the country, CIE has established itself as a unique and innovative platform for students to share perspectives, research and insights.

“CIE has empowered students like me to take charge of the entire publishing process, from soliciting submissions to peer-reviewing articles, to designing and publishing the final issues,” says Derek Thurber, assistant editor and student in MLFTC’s EdD in Leadership and Innovation program

CIE has helped bridge the gap between academia and society, addressing critical issues facing communities and providing a platform for voices that may not otherwise be heard. Through its diverse and interdisciplinary content, the journal aims to promote social justice, equity and inclusion and contribute to the greater good of society, Thurber says.

Over the past 25 years, CIE has reached 1,404,329 readers across 341 published articles. The anniversary celebration on March 3 featured a panel of the founding editors, guest speaker Sabina Leonelli, University of Exeter, as well as a workshop led by PREreview instructors.
