Team-teaching model aims to make teaching sustainable

Like many states in the U.S., Arizona has experienced difficulty in filling teaching positions. Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is working to address the issue, among others in education, with Next Education Workforce models. The team-based teaching models aim to deliver better outcomes for learners and make the job of teaching more rewarding and sustainable, Brent Maddin, executive director of MLFTC’s Next Education Workforce Initiative, told ABC15.

Five Arizona school districts — Mesa Public Schools, ASU Preparatory Academy, Roosevelt, Kyrene and Creighton — have adopted Next Education Workforce models. 

These models have several teachers working with a group of students in order to ensure every student’s needs are met, Maddin says. “At the same time,” he says, “the job of a teacher is more sustainable for those educators and they stay in the job longer.” 

Stevenson Elementary School Principal Krista Adams told ABC15, “It [the model] was so successful with our one team last year … we went schoolwide. It’s exciting. This is what we want for our kids, this is what we want for our educators and finally we’re seeing it happening,” she says.
