MLFTC offers new resources to help schools build teams of educators

Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College is offering a collection of resources to help education teams, schools and districts redesign intern and resident roles to better meet the needs of students, the educators on the team, and the interns and residents themselves.

“We believe the team approach, which replaces the prevalent one-teacher candidate, one-mentor model, has benefits for students, teacher candidates and educators,” says Brent Maddin, executive director, Next Education Workforce. One such benefit, Maddin says, is that “teachers are able to fill in the gaps for one another, so to speak.”

To build the Next Education Workforce, MLFTC works with schools and other partners to provide all students with deeper and personalized learning by building teams of educators with distributed expertise, and empower educators by developing new opportunities for role-based specialization and advancement. 

In schools with Next Education Workforce models, l, a single educator is not expected to be all things to all learners at all times. Instead, each task is unpacked and reallocated, sustainably, to team members. What’s the outcome? An effective education workforce made up of a team of professionals with diverse experience to meet the needs of each unique learner. 

“When I go into classrooms to do observations, I see kids who have a team of educators. This incredible group of people surrounds them and uses their set of expertise to make sure all of those kids have their needs met — all day long,” says Kelly Owen, clinical assistant professor and senior program strategist at MLFTC.
