MLFTC will host Building the Next Normal, a two-day virtual convening about the Next Education Workforce in January. The event, open to the public, will focus on questions of equity, deeper and personalized learning, and how to build a more effective and sustainable education workforce.

The keynote speaker is Larry Cuban, professor emeritus of education at Stanford University and former president of the American Educational Research Association.

The interactive convening will also include small group conversations with the following experts:

  • Ron Beghetto, professor and Pinnacle West Presidential Chair at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College

  • Peggy Brookins, president and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

  • Maria E. Hyler, deputy director of the Learning Policy Institute, Washington, D.C.

  • Richard Ingersoll, professor of education and sociology, University of Pennsylvania

  • Carlos Moreno, co-executive director for Big Picture Learning

  • Brooke Stafford-Brizard, vice president research to practice at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

More speakers will be announced soon.

The event keynote is a discussion between Cuban and MLFTC Dean Carole Basile. Cuban has a diverse career background as a high school social studies teacher, district superintendent and university professor. He has published op-ed pieces, scholarly articles and books on classroom teaching, the history of school reform, how policy gets translated into practice, and teacher and student use of technologies in K–12 and college.

“This will not be your typical talking-head, check-your-email-on-the-side online convening,” says Brent Maddin, executive director of the Next Education Workforce. Instead, participants will engage with each other and a set of experts. Register to explore one of the following topics:

  • Empower teams of educators to identify, address and monitor issues of equity for all learners

  • Leverage teams of educators to design deeper, more personalized learning experiences for all students

  • Design policies at the local, state and national levels that support the development of the Next Education Workforce

  • Define and measure broader outcomes for learners and educators

  • Design teacher and leader preparation programs to build the Next Education Workforce

Attendees will have the opportunity to register for before Dec. 14 for early-bird pricing of $100 per person. After Dec. 14, registration costs increase to $150 per person.
