Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College launches two podcasts

Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College launched two new podcasts that focus on education and feature education experts. Learning Futures explores education systems; while Next Education Workforce focuses on redesigning education.

Learning Futures: Hosted by Ronald Beghetto, Pinnacle West Presidential Chair and professor  

Beghetto explores education systems and what might happen if they did more and thought differently about preparing learners to thrive in the future. Each episode presents colleagues, researchers, education leaders and other guests who share how they’re thinking about and addressing the most pressing challenges in education. 

“Hosting this inaugural season of the Learning Futures podcast has been such a rewarding experience for me. I’m grateful to be surrounded by an outstanding team of MLFTC podcast producers and have the opportunity to talk with and learn from a fascinating and compelling line-up of guests. I’m looking forward to season two,” says Beghetto.  

Learning Futures features an episode with Regents Professor Emeritus and Research Professor David Berliner in which he and Beghetto talk about the past and recent (dis)respect of U.S. teachers and the consequences of this. They also discuss how building community can help address social issues that plague schools. Listen to the episode. 

Beghetto also invites Washington State University Associate Professor of Educational Leadership Katherine Rodela on the podcast to talk about her work with minority students, especially within Latinx communities, and how that has impacted the way she sees education and school leadership. Next Education Workforce: Hosted by Brent Maddin, executive director of the Next Education Workforce Initiative

This podcast is about redesigning education for learners and educators. Maddin has conversations with education experts as they ask — and answer — questions of equity, deeper and personalized learning, and how to build a more effective and sustainable education workforce. 

Each episode of Season 1 highlights the work of a speaker to be featured at Building the Next Normal. The two-day virtual convening on January 28 and 29 invites attendees into small-group conversations with experts around one of five themes.

“In this moment, we have an opportunity to examine our education workforce: what people do, how they work together, and their collective capacity to deliver deeper and personalized learning for all students,” Maddin says. “Each of these experts bring years of research, practice and expertise to the table. We hope listeners walk away from the podcast with new insights and perspectives and consider joining us in January to continue and deepen the conversation.”

Next Education Workforce features an episode with vice president for research to practice at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, Brooke Stafford-Brizard. The two discuss the purpose of education, the importance of measuring a broader set of outcomes in our effort to define “success” for students, educator identity development and more. Listen now. 

Maddin also chats with president and CEO of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards, Peggy Brookins. Maddin and Brookins talk about the school she founded, broader outcomes for learners and educators, policy recommendations and bringing experts from the community into the classroom.
