Mentoring is key in the professional development of graduate students. Every year, ASU’s Graduate College recognizes outstanding faculty members for commitment to the graduate student and postdoctoral scholar communities through mentoring excellence, devotion to professional development and career advancement, and fostering inclusive and collaborative academic environments.

This year — out of a competitive field of nominees — Carla Firetto, assistant professor in the Division of Teacher Preparation at Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, is the recipient of the 2021–2022 Outstanding Instructional Faculty Mentor award. This award recognizes the importance of relationships between faculty and graduate students and the profound effect Firetto has on her students.

Firetto’s research aims to facilitate the comprehension of complex texts and content through small-group discussions. She focuses on identifying the individual differences that account for variation in a student’s ability to comprehend and integrate multiple, complex texts, as well as the mechanisms that promote these processes.

The 2021–2022 Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award reception will be held on Monday, Feb. 28 from noon–1 p.m. in the Carson Ballroom at Tempe campus.
