Overview

The Russell Sage Foundation (RSF), in partnership with the Economic Mobility and Opportunity program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), seeks to advance innovative research on economic mobility and access to opportunity in the United States. We are particularly interested in research focused on diagnosing and addressing structural barriers to economic mobility in this country. This initiative is designed to support early- and mid-career tenure-track scholars, and to promote diversity by prioritizing applications from scholars who are underrepresented in the social sciences. This includes racial, ethnic, gender, disciplinary, institutional, and geographic diversity.

Solicitation Limitations:
Only tenure track assistant professors, and associate professors who have been in the rank for less than seven years are eligible to apply. The pipeline grants competition is only available to faculty who have not previously received a research grant or a visiting fellowship from RSF. The program seeks to promote racial, ethnic, gender, disciplinary, institutional, and geographic diversity and will prioritize applications from scholars who are underrepresented in the social sciences.

RSF does not allow indirect costs on small grants and restricts the project period to one year.
Other Information:
Trustee Grants are generally capped at $175,000, including 15% indirect costs. Presidential Grants are capped at $35,000 (no indirect costs). PIs may request up to $50,000 (no indirect costs) when the proposed research project has special needs for gathering data (e.g.: qualitative research) or gaining access to restricted-use data.

AREAS OF INTEREST:
• Income & Wealth
• Neighborhood Characteristics and Place-Based Interventions
• Gentrification, Segregation, and Housing Policy
• Education
• Social Capital
• Youth and Young Adults of Color
• Criminal Justice & the Legal System
• Accessing the Safety Net
• Labor Markets

RSF expects to fund between 10-15 one-year projects by assistant and associate professors. The next proposal deadline is 2pm ET on November 4, 2020, for funding starting in Summer 2021. The funded researchers will be invited to submit their findings at a conference at the Russell Sage Foundation the following year, with investigators, mentors, advisory committee members, and other experts in attendance.
