Overview

REVISED CALL FOR PROPOSALS - the deadline is now October 15, 2020.

For this funding cycle, in recognition of our obligation to join the long overdue but growing consensus to end systemic racism in American societal institutions and organizations along with police brutalization of Black people, priority will be given to projects that explicitly promote racial justice and fairer and more equitable laws, policies and practices.

Additionally, we recognize the co-occurring public health crisis that has altered the operational capacities of many projects requiring large gatherings and other activities that may be problematic for both planning new projects or projecting completion of those already underway. Given these unusual circumstances, provide the best description possible of how your project will be implemented, and any contingent plans that you might believe are needed.

The Sociological Initiatives Foundation (SIF) is dedicated to the belief that research and action are intrinsically inseparable. We invite concept proposals for projects that link an explicit research design to a concrete social action strategy. Projects should also have specifically stated social change goals. In the past SIF has funded projects in the areas of civic participation, community organizing, crime and law, education, health, housing, immigration, labor organizing, and language/literacy.

Preference is given to applicants that are:

community-led academic partnerships

advocacy or community groups that conduct research that can withstand challenge in academic and policy arenas

grassroots organizations that organize or link to a constituency through their research

A limited number of concept applicants will be invited to submit full proposals in the early spring of 2021. Grants will be announced in June 2021. Projects typically take two years, so applicants should think in terms of such a timeline.

Other Information:
Commonly Asked Questions

What is the difference between community based research and traditional academic research in communities? We hope applicants are very familiar with community-based research. Community based research is a collaborative and participatory approach to research in which community organizations (schools, residents and civic leaders) partner with academic researchers (faculty, academic staff and students) to produce knowledge that solves real world problems. Community based research seeks community engagement at each phase of the research project. Community Based Research does not specify one model of research over another; models are selected based on what is most appropriate to the problems to be studied and solved.

Does the project have to include a research component? Yes. All projects must have a strong research component. The mission of the Foundation is to support projects that use research and related strategies of assessment and inquiry to build knowledge and help address social concerns. Program evaluation projects are not a priority of the foundation.

Can our request include overhead/indirect costs? The foundation does not support indirect costs or administrative overhead of academic institutions.

Will the foundation support faculty release time as part of the project budget? The foundation will allow academic institutions to allocate up to $4,000 in their budget requests to support faculty release time or course substitutions.

To see examples of recently funded objectives/research questions, read the FAQs at http://www.sifoundation.org/faqs/</a…;.
