Overview

It is more important than ever for all students to feel welcome, safe and understood at school and for learning environments to support this goal. Assessment for Good (AFG) is an Inclusive R&D program focused on dramatically improving conditions for the social and emotional health and positive academic outcomes of learners aged 8-13, with a special focus on Black and Latinx students. This is a critical phase in students’ lives for identity development and foundational academic development. It is also the time when most students are initially assessed for disabilities.

AFG seeks to improve outcomes for students with and without disabilities through a series of R&D projects that will advance the capabilities needed in a responsive and accessible system of asset-based assessment. By redesigning assessment in this way, educators will have access to vital information on the strengths that students bring to the classroom, allowing them to provide a rich instructional experience that values learner diversity. Transforming assessment so that it connects educators, parents, and students together as partners in learning will maximize impact – setting the stage for an equitable, affirming, and relevant educational experience.

LEARN is a means of identifying innovative, rapid response research proposals that will advance solutions that support the assessment of social, emotional and educational assets in culturally diverse populations.

GOAL: Can we build a set of assessment tools that point us to the assets that Black and Latinx learners bring to the learning environment?

Through this funding opportunity, our goal is to greate a set of assessment tools. We are interested in:

Breakthrough tools that are focused on identity and/or emotion development.

Bold ideas that will connect SEL development into existing learning or social routines.

Exploratory models that look at:

environtmental variables/contests;

student/caregiver administration; or

multiple versions of assessment across instructional formats

Solicitation Limitations:
Research teams and individuals may be included in multiple proposals. However, in order to support as many promising proposals as possible, teams may only carry one funded project at a time. In the case that multiple projects from a team and/or individual were deemed fundable, AFG will work with
said team/individual to determine which funded projects will be prioritized for funding during each cycle. Proposers will have the opportunity to indicate their desire for a subsequent round of funding for a single project for a total investment of $400,000 under LEARN.

Under special circumstances, individuals may be listed on more than one funded team at a time. In these cases, the AFG team may request additional information, such as a team interview, in order to aid in funding decisions.
Other Information:
Under LEARN, AFG seeks research proposals that can be completed in 12 months or less. LEARN is a two-step process. Interested proposers will submit a one-page Letter of Intent (LOI). Proposers will provide a brief description of their idea and approach for a given topic along with an estimate of project cost. Selected proposers will then be invited by the program to complete a full submission. Letters of intent can be submitted for support between $100,000 and $300,000. Proposers can secure support through LEARN a maximum of two times per research project for a total award value of $400,000.

We anticipate two rounds of LOI reviews per year for LEARN. LOIs will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. PDT on the last day of each open period. Open periods for LOI submission will be as follows:

● February 15, 2022 - March 1, 2022
● August 15, 2022 - September 1, 2022
● February 15, 2023 - March 1, 2023
● August 15, 2023 - September 1, 2023
● February 15, 2024 - March 1, 2024
● August 15, 2024 - September 1, 2024

Learn more about the Request for Proposals by watching the webinar HERE.
Last Updated:
