Overview

2021 NEA Arts Projects (all 15 disciplines) / Challenge America - February sponsor deadline

Grants for Arts Projects is the National Endowment for the Arts’ principal grants program. Through project-based funding, we support public engagement with, and access to, various forms of excellent art across the nation, the creation of art that meets the highest standards of excellence, learning in the arts at all stages of life, and the integration of the arts into the fabric of community life. Projects may be large or small, existing or new, and may take place in any part of the nation’s 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories. The National Endowment for the Arts is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and fostering mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all individuals and groups.

While we welcome applications for a variety of artistically excellent projects, we encourage projects that address any of the following activities below:

Celebrate America’s creativity and/or cultural heritage.

Invite a dialogue that fosters mutual respect for the diverse beliefs and values of all persons and groups.

Enrich our humanity by broadening our understanding of ourselves as individuals and as a society.

Applications accepted for the following 15 Disciplines:

Artist Communities

Arts Education

Dance

Design

Folk & Traditional Arts

Literary Arts

Local Arts Agencies

Media Arts (ASU is allowed 1 more application for the Media Arts July deadline; see details in Solicitation Limitations below).

Museums

Music

Musical Theater

Opera

Presenting & Multidiscplinary Works

Theater

Visual Arts

In the spirit of White House Executive Orders that encourage federal agencies to engage with typically underserved constituencies, the National Endowment for the Arts encourages applications from:

Historically Black Colleges and Universities,

Tribal Colleges and Universities,

American Indian and Alaska Native tribes,

African American Serving Institutions,

Hispanic Serving Institutions,

Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and

Organizations that support the independence and lifelong inclusion of people with disabilities.

Challenge America
The 2020 Challenge America competition (April 9, 2020) was canceled for the National Endowment for the Arts to effectively and efficiently gear up to distribute $75 million in funding provided to it by the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Challenge America applicants were directed to apply for Grants for Arts Projects with a deadline of July 9, 2020. However, new guidelines will be available in January 2021 and the ASU limited submissions competition portal will be updated with additional guidance at that time. See Solicitation Limitations below for more details.

Solicitation Limitations:
A minimum cost share/match equal to the grant amount is required. Applicants may request cost share/matching grants ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. ASU may submit only one (1) application to the sponsoring organization for either the Arts Projects or Challenge America programs. The Arts Projects program has two submissions cycles each year (February/July). The Challenge America program deadline is situated between the two Arts Projects cycles. Due to the limitation of one application per year (in either Arts Projects or Challenge America), and the limitation of Artist Communities and Design applications only allowed in February, ASU Limited Submissions uses a combined internal deadline. Except in the Arts projects Media Arts category (ASU is allowed 1 more for the July deadline, internal competition available here https://asu.info…;), which is a separate internal deadline.
