Overview

Lumina Foundation believes that education provides the basis for individual opportunity, economic vitality and social stability. With its partners, Lumina strives to meet workforce demands and close gaps in attainment for groups not historically well-served by higher education. Lumina’s overarching goal is to increase the higher education attainment rate of the United States to 60 percent by 2025. This will represent an increase of 23 million graduates above current levels of production. While our mission focuses on both student access and success in higher education, our emphasis is on attainment, defined as completing post-secondary certificates, associate and baccalaureate degrees and credentials.

Lumina’s outcomes-based approach focuses on helping to design and build an equitable, accessible, responsive and accountable higher education system while fostering a national sense of urgency for action to achieve the goal of 60 percent of Americans with a college degree, workforce certificate, or other high-quality credential beyond high school by 2025.

Our current funding is directed to advance the strategies outlined in Lumina's 2017-20 Priorities for Action.

Scaling Affordable Pathways: A system for learning beyond high school that assures equitable access to affordable pathways to quality credentials

Transparent Credentials: A new, national system of transparent, quality credentials exists in which learning is recognized however it occurs, offering every American a chance for a better life.

Competency-Based Learning: A national expansion of competency-based learning takes place that recognizes measuring academic progress based on demonstrations of what students know and can do.

First Credential for Adults: Pathways to initial credentials – including workforce certificates and industry certifications – exist for adults who have not yet pursued education beyond high school.

Quality Assurance: An integrated quality assurance system is in place for credentialed learning beyond high school that is rooted in measuring student outcomes and enabling responsible innovation.
