Overview

<div>The Global Sport Institute at Arizona State University is a research institute where diverse disciplines come together to thoughtfully examine critical issues affecting sport throughout the world. We bridge the gap between academic inquiry and real-life application by distilling our findings into meaningful information that can be easily understood and actively shared with the audiences who need it most.</div> <div></div> <div>Our goal is to make a positive impact on sport and anyone who sport touches. Through our seed grant program, the Institute provides financial support that allows deeper exploration of the issues confronting sport.</div> <div></div> <div>Annual Theme -- Each year the Institute selects an annual theme that is integrated into our research, lectures, events, and multimedia content. The 2017-18 academic year theme was Sport 2036, which examined what sport could and should look like in the year 2036. The points of emphasis were automation, wearables (and other performance-tracking devices), and demographics. During the 2018-19 academic year, the theme was Race and Sport Around the Globe, examining how race, intersecting with other social constructions, is a central factor in access, opportunities, and experiences in sport. This academic year, the theme is Sport and The Body. To further build our knowledge base, we invite faculty and students to advance their disciplines and pursue work that explores any of the broad, global issues they consider related to Sport and The Body.</div> <div></div> <div>We ask applicants to clearly articulate how they conceptualize, define, and use the body in their proposed work and how their project might create positive impact. In addition, we desire that the proposed work be global in nature, examining issues, processes, or phenomena that can or will impact audiences throughout the world. We encourage proposals from across any disciplines, including humanities, science, arts and multimedia. We welcome other interpretations of the Sport and the Body theme that are not confined to traditional research-based studies. Any interpretation that prompts examination and contemplation of the body and its relationship to sport is welcome as a submission.</div>

Solicitation Limitations: <p>Additional and Future Research As noted earlier, the Global Sport Institute’s research theme will evolve on an annual basis. Future years may focus on topics such as sustainability, gender, and access. The Institute invites those wishing to jumpstart their research related to any of these topics to submit a proposal during the 2019-20 application period. Although these proposals will fall outside of the annual research theme, we will provide feedback and applicants will be well positioned for subsequent calls if not selected in this<br>round. In addition, the Institute is committed to the long-term exploration of its past annual themes and will accept a limited number of qualified proposals covering the themes of Sport 2036 and Race and Sport Around the Globe. Finally, we are willing on a case-by-case basis to consider other exceptional sport-related research proposal that fall outside of these previously stated themes. Proposals for research already underway may be submitted. However, since a goal of the program is to stimulate original research, proposals seeking support for projects with major portions already completed may not be as competitive. It is the responsibility of the grant awardee to accurately report the state of progress on the proposed research at the time of proposal submission.</p> Other Information:<div>Evaluation Process and Award Expectations Research Grant Evaluation As mentioned previously, the primary intended outcome of the Global Sport Institute research grant is to secure additional external funding. In your application, we ask that you be explicit in how you plan to pursue additional donor funds, or alternatively, how the funding requested will lead to a completed deliverable in a timely fashion. Proposals for research grants are evaluated on both the potential for future publication of the research in academic journals as a joint effort between the academic unit and the Institute, and their likelihood of impact beyond<br>the academic world. Proposals for each project will be reviewed and evaluated by a panel of faculty, staff and subject matter experts familiar with the type of approach being considered.</div> <div>Letter of Intent: September 13, 2019 at 5pm MST <br>Invitation to full proposal: September 27, 2019 at 5pm MST <br>Full proposal submission: November 1, 2019 at 5pm MST <br>Anticipated award notification: November 22, 2019 <br>Initial funding date: January 13, 2020</div>
