The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program is the largest program of its kind in the United States, awarding more than 800 fellowships annually. Over 400 different types of opportunities are available to teach, research and conduct professional projects in more than 135 countries. Whether you are higher education faculty and administrators, or, professionals, artists, journalists, scientists, and independent scholars outside of the academy, the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program has international opportunities to fit your needs and further your goals. The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers three unique opportunities (1) Global Scholar Award, (2) Public Policy Fellowship, (3) Arctic Initiative; and four types of activities (1) Teaching, (2) Research, (3) Teaching/Research; and (4) Professional Projects).

The Fulbright Global Scholar Award allows U.S. academics and professionals to engage in multi-country, trans-regional projects. As a truly worldwide award, U.S. scholars will be able to propose research or combined teaching/research activity in two to three countries with flexible schedule options; trips can be conducted within one academic year or spread over two consecutive years with a total duration of three to six months total with a minimum of one month spent in each host country, each visit.

Applications are welcome from a wide range of scholars - early career, professor emeriti, independent scholars - and from all disciplines, including those with an interdisciplinary focus. The Fulbright Scholar Program is designed to expand and strengthen the relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of the rest of the world. To support this mission, grantees will be asked to give public talks, mentor students and otherwise engage with the host country community, in addition to their primary research or teaching/research activity.

Scholars and appropriately qualified professionals outside of academia may engage in collaborative research or combine teaching and research activities or pursue a professional project in their area of specialization in two to three countries in at least two different world regions. Activities may also include consulting on curriculum, program and faculty development and conducting workshops. Applicants with a teaching/research project may determine the percentage of the grant dedicated to each activity and should define this in the project proposal. The activities can be conducted in the same academic year or over the course of two consecutive years and may consist of one multi-country trip, two or three single country trips or two dual-country trips.

SCHOLARS SELECTED FOR THIS AWARD CAN CHOOSE TO:

Advise and/or mentor students

Assist in faculty, curriculum, and/or program development

Conduct a research project designated by the host institution

Conduct a research project of the applicant’s choosing

Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses designated by the host institution

Teach graduate and/or undergraduate courses of the applicant’s choosing

Conduct a professional and/or artistic project

The Flex Award is designed for scholars who require multiple visits to the host country.
