Overview

<p>For all grant types, all proposed projects should be bold, innovative, and potentially transformative and have a primary focus in conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology. Projects should also align to one of three focus areas: wildlife, human journey, and changing planet.</p> <p>Exploration Grants: An Exploration Grant application is a request for funding by an experienced project leader in the areas of conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology. The applicant and his or her team members are expected to demonstrate successful completion of similar projects with measurable and/or tangible results.</p> <p>Requests for Proposals: As part of supporting a planet in balance, National Geographic offers Exploration grants that concentrate on certain key issues. Applicants may propose projects focused in conservation, education, research, storytelling, or technology in response to the special Requests for Proposals (RFPs) listed below.</p> <p>Making the Case for Nature - The goal of this RFP is to determine effective ways to market wildlife to inspire positive action to save species by applying principles of science communication. We seek proposals from around the world that advance the science of nature communication by systematically testing visual and marketing methods; visualizing complex data; or developing and evaluating new techniques directed to motivate action to conserve wildlife.</p> <p>Participatory Science - We seek proposals from around the world that will engage learners and avocational researchers in citizen science activities to address real world problems, strengthen science literacy skills, and lead to actions in science and conservation</p>

Solicitation Limitations: <p>As a result of changes in Chinese law effective January 1, 2017, the National Geographic Society is unable to support new grantee work in mainland China.<br>You may be required to obtain an Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) license through the U.S.<br>You are prohibited from engaging in any grant-funded work with any individual or organization who is on the Specially Designated National (SDN) list maintained by the U.S. Treasury.</p> Other Information:<p>Making the Case for Nature - Priority will be given to projects that aim to do one or more of the following:<br>• Identify the specific visual and narrative communication mechanisms that will elicit action for wildlife conservation from target audiences. Multidisciplinary collaborations between scientists (e.g., neuroscientists, psychologists) and visual artists (e.g., photographers, videographers, painters, technologists) are strongly encouraged <br>• Measure differences in attitudes and/or behaviors across diverse audiences (e.g., ages, geographic regions, backgrounds) based on how information about wildlife is presented; proposals that use creative approaches to overcome sample size issues are encouraged<br>• Apply and test social marketing principles to determine best practices when communicating about wildlife conservation to inspire action and increase or maintain engagement from target audiences</p> <p>Participatory Science - Priority will be given to research, education, and technology projects that create and execute new digital applications, transform existing applications and products, or use current technologies to do one or more of the following:</p> <p>• Teach students and other citizen scientists about the planet using experiential, crowdsourced technology<br>• Encourage students and other citizen scientists who engage with these technologies and projects to build the attitudes, skills, and knowledge necessary to become stewards of the planet and contribute to solving real-world issues<br>• Generate data and/or develop open-source technologies that contribute to scientific inquiry and advance our understanding of the planet</p> <p>Additionally, all applicants should include a technologist on the project team.</p>
