Overview

With this Dear Colleague Letter (DCL), the National Science Foundation notifies the community of a collaboration with Schmidt Futures to offer supplemental funding supporting data science education for grade 6-12 students and teachers.

This opportunity is open only to organizations with active data science education awards in the following programs:

Harnessing the Data Revolution (HDR): Data Science Corps (DSC) Program (NSF 21-523 and NSF 19-518)

CS for All: Research and RPPs: Computer Science for All (NSF 20-539)

DRK-12: Discovery Research PreK-12 (NSF 20-572)

ITEST: Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (NSF 19-583).

This DCL seeks to expand data science partnerships among academia, industry, and other communities of practice to provide educational experiences for grade 6-12 students and/or teachers. These partnerships will strengthen grade 6-12 data science educational curricula, classroom activities, and teacher professional development opportunities, to broaden student awareness of, and participation in, data science. It is additionally expected that these partnerships will deepen data science researchers' understanding of current grade 6-12 curricula, pedagogy, classroom practices, student needs, and educational environments.

This supplemental funding opportunity supports the development of a diverse, globally competitive STEM workforce and enhanced infrastructure for research and education. Additionally supporting NSF's mission to broaden opportunities and expand the participation of groups, institutions, and geographic regions that are underrepresented in STEM disciplines, this DCL encourages partnerships that are situated and address long-standing disparities across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups.

The original award must be in one of the programs listed above and must address data science education, in any educational setting. Funded supplements will provide support for periods of up to two years. If the award to which the supplement applies expires within a year after the start date of the proposed supplemental activity, the Principal Investigator (PI) should provide this information at the time of submission to [email protected]</a> as well as to the cognizant Program Director for the original award.

Other Information:

These supplemental funding requests should not exceed 20% of the original award size or $200,000, whichever is smaller.

PIs should note that supplemental funding requests in response to this DCL should be submitted to the original NSF program associated with the active research award for which supplemental funding is requested. After the submission of their supplemental funding request, PIs should alert the cognizant Program Directors by sending an email to [email protected]</a> with the proposal number assigned to the submission of their supplemental request. In addition, if the award to which the supplement applies expires within a year after the start date of the proposed supplemental activity, the PI should provide this information at the time of submission to [email protected]</a> and the cognizant Program Director for the original award.
