Overview

<p>The pre-doctoral, dissertation, and postdoctoral fellowships are awarded to individuals who show superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource for enriching the education of all students. Education is an approved focus area.</p> <p>Three types of fellowships are available through the program:</p> <ul> <li>Predoctoral Awards — Stipends of $24,000 a year for three years will be awarded in support of individuals engaged in graduate study leading to a PhD or ScD degree. Approximately seventy fellowships will be awarded in this category. Individuals who as of the 2020 fall semester require a minimum of three years of study to complete their Ph.D./Sc.D. degree, and who have not earned a doctoral degree at any time, in any field.</li> <li>Dissertation Awards — A one-year stipend of $25,000 will be awarded to individuals in the final year of writing and defense of his/her dissertation leading to a PhD or ScD degree. Approximately thirty-six fellowships will be awarded in this category. Individuals who will complete the dissertation in a period of 9-12 months during the 2020-2021 academic year, who, by December 10, 2019, have completed all departmental and institutional requirements for their degree, except for writing and defense of the dissertation, and who have not earned a doctoral degree at any time, in any field.</li> <li>Postdoctoral Awards — One-year stipends of $45,000 will be awarded in support of individuals engaged in postdoctoral study after the attainment of the PhD or ScD degree. Approximately twenty fellowships will be awarded in this category. Individuals who have completed all the requirements for a Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree, including successful defense of the dissertation, no earlier than December 10, 2012 and no later than December 10, 2019 in an <a href="http://nrc58.nas.edu/FordApplicants20/ExtRpts/FieldCodeList.aspx&quot; target="_blank">eligible research-based field</a> from a U.S. institution of higher education.</li> </ul> <p>Eligibility to apply for a Ford fellowship is limited to:</p> <ul> <li>All U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and U.S. permanent residents (holders of a Permanent Resident Card), as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Program, Indigenous individuals exercising rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794, political asylees, and refugees, regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, or sexual orientation,</li> <li>Individuals with evidence of superior academic achievement (such as grade point average, class rank, honors or other designations), and</li> <li>Individuals committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level.</li> </ul> <p>Also see specific limitations listed above for each fellowship type.</p>
