American Fellowships

Overview

<p>AAUW American Fellowships support women scholars who are pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.</p> <p>There are three types of American Fellowship opportunities:</p> <p><strong>DISSERTATION FELLOWSHIPS</strong></p> <p>American Dissertation Fellowships funds are available for</p> <ul> <li>Educational expenses.</li> <li>Living expenses.</li> <li>Dependent child care.</li> <li>Travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars that does not exceed 10 percent of the fellowship total.</li> </ul> <p>American Dissertation Fellowships funds are not available for:</p> <ul> <li>Purchase of equipment.</li> <li>Indirect costs.</li> <li>Research assistants.</li> <li>Previous expenditures, deficits, or repayment of loans.</li> <li>Publication costs.</li> <li>Institutional (overhead) costs.</li> <li>Tuition for dependent’s education.</li> <li>Tuition for coursework that is in addition to credits required for maintaining full-time status while completing a dissertation.</li> <li>Extended field research.</li> </ul> <p><strong>POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH LEAVE FELLOWSHIPS</strong></p> <p><span>American Postdoctoral Fellowships funds are available for:</span></p> <ul> <li>Educational expenses.</li> <li>Living expenses.</li> <li>Dependent child care.</li> <li>Travel to professional meetings, conferences, or seminars that does not exceed 10 percent of the fellowship total.</li> </ul> <p>American Postdoctoral Fellowships funds are not available for:</p> <ul> <li>Purchase of equipment.</li> <li>Indirect costs.</li> <li>Research assistants.</li> <li>Previous expenditures, deficits or repayment of loans.</li> <li>Publication costs.</li> <li>Institutional (overhead) costs.</li> <li>Tuition for dependent’s education.</li> <li>Tuition for additional coursework.</li> </ul> <p><strong>SHORT-TERM RESEARCH PUBLICATION GRANTS</strong></p> <p>American Short-Term Research Publication Grants funds are available for:</p> <ul> <li>Living expenses.</li> <li>Dependent child care.</li> <li>Clerical and technical support.</li> <li>Research assistance related to verification (not basic research).</li> <li>Office supplies, postage, copying and related expenses.</li> <li>Journal fees.</li> </ul> <p>American Short-Term Research Publication Grants funds are not available for:</p> <ul> <li>Purchase of equipment.</li> <li>Indirect costs.</li> <li>Previous expenditures, deficits or repayment of loans.</li> <li>Institutional (overhead) costs.</li> <li>Tuition for dependent’s education.</li> <li>Travel.</li> <li>Salary increase.</li> <li>Doctoral dissertation research or writing.</li> </ul> <p></p>
