In the news: Schools are tackling mental health this summer
Schools districts across the country are using summer school this year to address the lasting affects the Covid-19 pandemic is having on students, particularly that of mental health. In addition to learning loss, kids have reported loneliness, anxiety and depression as a result of school shutdowns and disruptions, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The Center on Reinventing Public Education, housed at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, reported that at least 28 of the largest school districts in the U.S. are using a chunk of the $122 billion in school Covid-19 rescue funds to expand summer school programs to include non-academic activities such as art, athletics, discussion groups and access to mental health providers.
