MLFTC launches 13 new programs and specialties

Thirteen new programs or specialties are being launched this fall through Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. The new offerings are part of the college’s emphasis on providing students personalized options for specialized studies and flexible learning formats. 

 

Many of these are available via ASU Online or ASU Synch. ASU Online, which is now available in Arizona and 15 other state, allows students to complete coursework on their own schedules through asynchronous instruction. ASU Synch, offered to students in Arizona, is a format in which regularly scheduled classes take place remotely through Zoom.

 

Areas of focus include early childhood education, special education, elementary multilingual education, educational studies (instructional design) and physical education. See new programs below:   

  

New Bachelor of Arts in Education specializations  

Educational Studies-Instructional Design (BAE)  

Location: ASU Online 

This program is ideal for students interested in learning how to design effective academic experiences to solve instructional needs, training problems or performance gaps. Skills gained include conducting needs analysis, creating multimedia learning options, developing learning goals and instructional objectives, and producing digital learning solutions. This degree is designed for application throughout a range of organizations, including the education sector. 

 

Elementary Multilingual Education (BAE)  

Location: Tempe campus 

This program prepares students to become educators for linguistically and culturally diverse learners in grades K–8. Students complete internships prior to a full-time teaching residency. Graduates are eligible to earn an institutional recommendation from ASU for Arizona teacher certification in Elementary Education, K–8, as well as an endorsement from the Arizona Department of Education. 

 

Early Childhood Education (BAE)
Location: Tempe campus, ASU Sync 

This program prepares students to meet the educational, behavioral and social-emotional needs of children, age birth to age 8 or grade 3. Students learn how to create inclusive learning environments; conduct instructional design, planning and facilitation; and assess, monitor and report the progress of young children. Students complete internships prior to a full-time teaching residency to prepare them for entering the teaching profession. 

 

 Physical Education (BAE)    
Location: Polytechnic campus, Tempe campus 
This program offers specialized coursework paired with team-based internships and residencies and it allows students to obtain teacher certification after graduation. The curriculum directly aligns with national beginning teacher standards of The Society of Health and Physical Education Teachers of America.  

 

Special Education (BAE)  
Location: Tempe campus and ASU Sync  

This program prepares students to develop adaptive techniques for learners with disabilities and in the use of instructional and assistive technologies to facilitate success in the general education curriculum. Program graduates are eligible for the Standard Professional Mild/Moderate Disabilities Special Education Certificate — grades K–12.

Master’s degrees 

Early Childhood Education (Teacher Certification) MEd 
Location: ASU Online
This program is designed for those who may be seeking teacher certification in early childhood education while pursuing education research. Areas of focus include early childhood development and pedagogy, policy advocacy and analysis, literacy, evaluation and research. Students also have opportunities to complete two internships and a student teaching placement in both pre–K and grades K–3 settings 

 

Early Childhood Education MEd 
Location: ASU Online
This program is designed to support those wishing to advance their professional path while furthering their knowledge and skills in early childhood education research and working with infants and children in grades K–3. The program is ideal for those who may already have a teacher certificate and who may be interested in furthering a leadership role or in pursuing further doctoral studies.  

 

Certificates  

The following certificate options can be added to certain degree programs offered through MLFTC and are available through certain campus locations or ASU Sync. Prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of these certificates

 


 

Other 

 

The minor offers foundations of instructional design, theory and design of digital        learning, and digital learning evaluation. It is designed to prepare students for a variety of career options in educational settings and organizations. The minor, which does not lead to teacher certification, incorporates professional experience.
