From the classroom to the nonprofit world

MLFC alum Rhett Etherton shares how he went from the classroom to the nonprofit world
August 06, 2025

MLFC alum Rhett Etherton went from the classroom to the nonprofit world where he now helps youth-focused groups and educators incorporate learning into play and recreational activities.

After earning his bachelor’s degree from the Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation, Rhett discovered that the skills he honed through his degree and in the classroom — communication, leadership, and a passion for helping youth thrive — were just as valuable in the nonprofit world.

He joined Playworks, an organization that is dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children. Rhett’s story shows how a degree in education can take you down many different career paths in learning-related fields.

For others, the path to a career outside of the classroom may be more direct.

MLFC’s Bachelor of Arts in Education program in educational studies, available both online and in person, provides a flexible pathway to a bachelor's degree for students who want to work with children, youth and adults within nonprofit settings, community-based organizations, civic organizations and businesses.
