Frederick M. Hess, American Enterprise Institute director of education policy studies and Education Week blogger, unveiled his 2023 Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings. Each year, Hess’ committee of experts honors the top 200 university-based scholars in education — from a pool of over 20,000 — who did the most last year to shape educational practice and policy.

Professor Ronald Beghetto, Regents Professor Emeritus and Research Professor David C. Berliner, Regents Professor Emeritus Gene V Glass and Associate Dean of Scholarship and Innovation and Professor Punya Mishra, all faculty members at Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, were among the 2023 influencers.

Newly named to the list, Beghetto is an internationally recognized expert on creative thought and action in settings. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association and the Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts. Beghetto serves as an editor for the Journal of Creative Behavior and co-editor for Creativity Theory and Action in Education and has served as a creativity advisor for LEGO Foundation and the Cartoon Network. “We all have creative potential. We all have the ability to think and act in new ways,” says Beghetto.

Mishra, who was also recognized in 2022, is an affiliate faculty with the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts and co-hosts the MLFTC podcast, Learning Futures with Sean Leahy, director of Creative and Emerging Technologies at ASU. He is internationally recognized for his work in technology, creativity and aesthetics in learning and design-based education innovation, and with Matthew J. Koehler, professor at Michigan State University, co-developed the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge framework, which offers a productive approach to many of the dilemmas that teachers face in implementing educational technology in their classrooms. Mishra has received over $7 million in grants and published over 100 articles.

Both Berliner and Glass have been recognized previously as influencers. Berliner teaches in MLFTC’s division of educational leadership and policy studies. Glass has made many important contributions to education statistics, notably his development of "meta-analysis." In addition to numerous published research, Glass and Berliner co-authored, along with student scholars, the book "50 Myths and Lies that Threaten America's Public Schools.”
