This inaugural kickoff event of NSF-funded Global Futures Oriented Research Collective on Education for Sustainability (G-FORCES), a groundbreaking initiative that brings together international sustainability-oriented research networks from the natural sciences, social sciences and humanities to rearticulate the role of education in advancing planetary sustainability. This public event Learning, Unlearning, and Relearning: Education for Planetary Futures showcases the power and potential of transdisciplinary collaboration in advancing planetary sustainability.
In this roundtable discussion, we propose to shift attention from the lessons learned – a topic which has occupied the attention of education policymakers and practitioners for decades – to what should be unlearned from our ongoing practice. Unlike the incremental change through “lessons learned” within the existing system, “unlearning” entails a more fundamental questioning and reconfiguration of the established assumptions underlying the dominant system of modern schooling, acknowledging the limits of the status quo, while articulating alternatives.
