Student Success Coach training

Build skills for quality student success coaching

Student success coaches support attendance, student relationship building, and academic recovery for students. To help community members gain the skills needed to do all of that with confidence, Arizona State University’s Mary Lou Fulton College for Teaching and Learning Innovation and City Year collaborated to develop training resources for student success support and interventions.

The training resources

There are 12 nanocourses available in the Student Success Coach collection. Each nanocourse is 15-20 minutes of self-guided learning.

This collection prepares community members to introduce research-driven student success indicators at a classroom or school-wide level.

  • 4 nanocourses focused on factors that lead to student academic success
  • 4 nanocourses on student social emotional well-being
  • 4 nanocourses on supporting student attendance

These resources are hosted on the ASU Community Educator Learning Hub, an award-winning online learning platform designed to boost community members’ confidence and competency in supporting students.

More caring adults in schools can help students succeed

Developmental relationships with caring adults at school such as student success coaches, can make a positive impact on the social, emotional, and academic skills of young people. Evidence shows that student success coaches positively impact student engagement which can help them stay in school and on track to graduate(1). Providing access to asynchronous training is an important lever in growing the number of student success coaches trained and ready to make a positive impact with young people across the country.

In 2023-2024, student success coaches supported students in 27% of schools.

Having caring adults focused on supporting students in the ways that student success coaches do, has shown to significantly improve student attendance rates and reduce chronic absenteeism.
