The Master of Physical Education provides you with comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and procedures in physical education. Through instruction, practice and coursework, you will improve your instructional effectiveness and develop quality sport and physical education programs for school settings. The MPE gives you the flexibility to design a program of study that enhances your interests and professional specialization.

Time to completion

Total hours: This degree program is 33 credit hours. Students pursuing teacher certification will need to take additional coursework for a total of 58 credit hours.

Time to completion: 5–6 semesters (fall, spring and summer)

Program graduates will recieve a Master of Physical Education degree. You can also decide to pursue either or both of the following:

  • Arizona teacher certification in Secondary Education 
  • K–12 PE endorsement

Professional experiences

Professional experiences for this program vary by track.

MAC track
Master’s with certification students will complete an applied project and take the AEPA (NES) Physical Education exam. The certification track also includes internships for at least two semesters and a full-time student teaching experience in the last semester.

Master's degree only track
The culminating experience is an applied project and written comprehensive exam.

Admission requirements

You must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.

You must also have earned a bachelor's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution. Minimum GPA: 3.0 (in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework). If you don't meet the GPA requirement, you may be eligible for provisional admittance or a non-degree pathway.

Professional licensure
