The Master of Education in Higher and Postsecondary Education facilitates your professional development as a future administrator, leader or staff member at a college, university or community college. Your coursework will address a range of practice-focused topics, including: the history of higher education in the U.S.; organizational characteristics of colleges and universities; important laws and policies pertaining to administrative practice in higher education; how colleges and universities are funded; how to successfully work with diverse stakeholders in contemporary higher education; and how to collect and use data to improve decision-making. Most courses are offered in a hybrid format with 50 percent of the content delivered face-to-face (weekday evenings) and 50 percent through independent or technology-supported learning experiences and fieldwork.

This degree program is designed to advance your career as a:

  • Administrative leader in higher education
  • Student services staff, which includes admissions, academic advising, financial aid and retention initiatives
  • Student life and student affairs staff leader, which includes residential life, student activities, athletics and conduct
  • And other roles that require a foundation in organizational leadership and administrative functions.

Professional experiences

This program is highly focused on practical application. All students complete a supervised, 120-hour practicum experience at the location of their selection within the field. A final semester culminating experience consists of the creation and presentation of an applied project that demonstrates your learning and development, and will promote your career advancement in higher education.

The culminating experience is an action-research, applied project. You'll work with faculty mentors to propose and conduct a project in your local context.

This program also offers optional short-term study abroad experiences to give you an understanding of educational systems in other countries. Locations have included cities such as London, Sydney and Belize.

Admission requirements

You must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College.

You must also have earned a bachelor's degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution. Minimum GPA: 3.0 (in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework). If you don't meet the GPA requirement, you may be eligible for provisional admittance or a non-degree pathway.
