Biography

Yi Zheng studies theories and practices in educational and psychological testing. Examples of her research are developing tests/surveys/scales, developing psychometric procedures for testing program operations, and developing automated test assembly algorithms.

Professor Zheng is particularly specialized in computerized adaptive testing (CAT), which is a cutting-edge technology where computer algorithms are created to tailor a test in real time to each individual test-taker. Capitalizing on digital technology, CAT also provides great flexibility in test design and administration, ease in data management, and ever-emerging digital experiences for test takers.

Despite decades of development and increasing popularity, most research on CAT has been conducted through computer simulations. In order to better understand how various designs of CAT actually perform in the real world, one of Zheng's current projects is to develop CATs using an open-source computer platform and conduct experimental research with real participants.

Research Interests

My research focuses on improving the methods and technology of test design, delivery, scoring, and analysis. My main research specialty is computerized adaptive testing (e.g., online calibration, item selection, exposure control, content balancing). My other interest areas include item response theory, multistage adaptive testing, automated test assembly, test equating, test security, and cognitive diagnosis. Currently I'm also involved in various data mining research. Researchers who are interested in developing computer-based personalized assessments / measures are welcome to get in touch via email!
