Biography

Leanna Archambault, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College and the lead researcher/liaison for the sustainability science education project at the center for sustainable health. Her research areas include building sustainability literacy among pre-service and in-service teachers, teacher preparation for online and blended classrooms, the use of innovative technologies to improve learning outcomes, and the nature of technological pedagogical content knowledge.

Archambault was awarded the online learning innovator award for important research from the International Association for K-12 Online Learning in 2010 and 2012 and has published in several prominent journals. Archambault was named the promising research scholar for the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College in 2013. She seeks a lasting impact on the practice of future and existing teachers throughout the state of Arizona and beyond through collaborative development and research on a newly required course for preservice teachers centered on sustainability. Archambault is collaborating on a longitudinal study to examine how teachers who took the sustainability science for teachers course as part of their teacher education program are integrating sustainability in their current classrooms. Additional research is focused on helping international teachers develop information and communication technology (ICT) skills as well as their technological pedagogical content knowledge for integration in their classrooms. This mixed methods study is situated within the context of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), a grant funded by the U.S. Department of State.

Research Interests

Guiding Research Questions:

  • What are the challenges that teachers face in online environments, what skills do they need to be successful, and how can institutions of higher education work to better prepare educators for online and blended environments?
  • What is the nature of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) and how does this inform preparing teachers for 21st century classrooms, a growing number of which will not have walls?
  • How can the use of emerging technologies improve the teaching/learning process and outcomes for both teachers and students, to prepare the next generation of literate citizens, particularly with respect to sustainability isses?

Current Research Projects:

Dr. Archambault is collaborating on a longitudinal study to examine how teachers who took Sustainability Science for Teachers (SCN 400), as part of their teacher education program are integrating sustainability in their current classrooms. The first phase of this study involves launching a survey which will be followed up by interviews as well as observations of lessons in future phases.

Dr. Archambault is also researching how to help international teachers develop information and communication technology (ICT) skills as well as their technological pedagogical content knowledge for integration in their classrooms. This mixed methods study is situated within the context of the International Leaders in Education Program (ILEP), a grant funded by the U.S. Department of State.
