Biography

Jeanne M. Powers is an associate professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. Professor Powers' research focuses on school segregation, school choice, and school finance litigation. She has published in the Review of Research in Education, American Educational Research Journal, Educational Policy, American Journal of Education, Equity and Excellence in Education, and Law and Social Inquiry.

Professor Powers was awarded the AERA Review of Research Award in 2015 for her article, "From Segregation to School Finance: The Legal Context for Language Rights in the United States" (2014). Her most recent article entitled "Making the Visible Invisible: Willful Ignorance of Poverty and Social Inequalities in the Research-Policy Nexus" (with Drs. Fischman and Berliner) was published in the centennial issue of the Review of Research in Education.

Professor Powers is the editor of Review of Research in Education, the associate editor of Education Policy Analysis Archives, an open access peer-reviewed scholarly journal. She is a member of the editorial boards of the American Educational Research Journal, Race, Ethnicity and Education, and the National Education Policy Center (NEPC). She and Margarita Pivovarova are using the 2012 PISA to analyze the school contexts of immigrant students and the relationship between school characteristics and achievement gaps between immigrant and native-born students. They are also using administrative data to conduct a thorough analysis of teacher retention and attrition patterns in Arizona over the last five years; and plan to build a model of teacher retention based on the factors identified through that analysis and provide policy-relevant recommendations.
