OpenScholar (ASU presentation) https://web.asu.edu/home

  • Type: Drupal distribution, a Content Management System (CMS) built on the Drupal platform
  • Cost: Free
  • Status: Available now as Beta test.
  • Maintenance: UTO will maintain upgrades
  • Design: ASU Web standard compliant (items such as headers, styles, functionality, etc.)
  • Specifics: URL will have the ability to have custom domains using one of the following sub domains: .faculty.asu.edu, .lab.asu.edu, .project.asu.edu. If you opt to not have a custom domain, then it will be web.asu.edu/[name]
  • Usage: recommend for a cost-effective solution for faculty or lab websites
  • Pros: cost, maintenance handled by UTO, benefit from some of ASU's technology out of the box, such as ASUrite integration for users and editors.
  • Cons: restricted to specific set features; although built on Drupal, there are certain nuances that are handled differently than Drupal.


Digication

  • Type: Content Management System (CMS)
  • Cost: Free
  • Status: Available now. A mobile-friendly version is not up to speed yet, but UTO is exploring that option.
  • Maintenance: UTO will maintain upgrades
  • Design: there are some set templates to get you started along with an ASU look template
  • Specifics: URL will be asu.digication.com/[NAME]
  • Usage: recommend for class sites to collaborate or create a journal or portfolio
  • Pros: cost, maintenance, already being implemented for class projects, easy to use
  • Cons: limited features, URL is not ".asu.edu", content cannot be easily moved to different hosting environment.

Drupal (ASU install on Pantheon)

  • Open Source Content Management System (CMS)
  • Cost: hosting fee using Pantheon for an “.asu.edu” url - see Pantheon’s pricing/plans
  • Status: Available now.
  • Maintenance: UTO/Pantheon pushes updates ready to be implemented on site, but it's up to the individual to apply and maintain the site; recommend experienced Drupal user be available for system administration
  • Design: Drupal has many out of the box design options which you can customize. ASU created a distribution called "webspark", and incorporated all the needed components for an ASU web standard site. Although not mandated yet, ASU would like all to head in this direction to maintain an overall brand consistency.
  • Pros: good option for large sites, has the capability to create many views, ease of use once the editing is configured to your liking
  • Cons: back end is bulky and complex to incorporate many options and their configuration; must keep up with core and module updates, cost

WordPress (ASU install on Pantheon)

  • Type: Open source Content Management System (CMS)
  • Cost: hosting fee using Pantheon for an “.asu.edu” url – see Pantheon’s pricing/plans
  • Status: Available now
  • Maintenance: UTO/Pantheon pushes updates ready to be implemented on site, but it's up to the individual to apply and maintain the site; recommend experienced WordPress user be available for system administration
  • Design: WordPress has many design options. An ASU design option can be found in the ASU WordPress user group site
  • Pros: WordPress is the most popular Content Management System (CMS) and has a large open source community, user friendly out of the box
  • Cons: back end is bulky and complex to incorporate many options and their configuration; must keep up with version updates and maintenance; cost.


On your own

  • Type: Website creation applications
  • Cost: depends on individual site-building/hosting environment
  • Maintenance: usually, site maintenance is up to the individual and the hosting service maintains the servers. For a fee, these services can sometimes provide assistance with site building and maintenance.
  • Design: Whatever the service offers
  • Pros & cons: This article from PC magazine reviews website builders. Read it to compare features, costs and the pros and cons.

Domain names and hosting

Any of the website options provide access to obtain a domain name – the URL of the site – and offer hosting services.  Unless you choose to build a website completely from scratch, there should be no reason to search for a hosting service.
