Biography

Aryn R. Baxter leads Arizona State University's efforts to implement two comprehensive scholarship initiatives funded by the MasterCard Foundation which expand educational and leadership development opportunities for students from African countries. She is an international educator and scholarship program director whose research examines the learning experiences and trajectories of internationally mobile students. Professor Baxter is particularly interested in the role of social networks in advancing students' personal and professional goals. Her work seeks to inform how scholarship programs are designed to effectively expand higher education access and contribute to social transformation by examining the impact of international scholarship programs on students and institutions.

Research Interests

Guiding Research Questions:

  • How do internationally mobile students make meaning out of their learning experiences abroad?
  • What is the role of social networks in shaping the trajectories of scholarship program alumni?
  • How can international scholarship programs be designed to effectively expand higher education access and contribute to social transformation?

Current Research Projects:

Baxter currently oversees two international scholarship initiatives that support students from across the African continent who are pursuing bachelors and masters degrees at ASU through the MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program. Both programs aim to draw on relevant resources and research to support student success, leadership development, and transitions on to careers and other opportunities to contribute to their communities upon graduation. Through a mixed-methods study, Baxter and her colleagues are examining how participants in both programs make meaning out of their learning experiences abroad as they navigate post-graduation decisions.

As part of the second grant, Strengthening Institutional Linkages, ASU is working closely with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana to support MasterCard Foundation Scholars and facilitate faculty exchange and collaborative research. The team plans to examine how this partnership contributes to mutual learning and impact at both individual and institutional levels.

Baxter is also conducting a three-year study that examines the relationship between engagement with an online social networking and learning platform, social networks, and self-efficacy among students at African and North American universities.
