Secondary Education (Certificate)

Teach what you love without changing your major
More opportunity. More impact. More fun.

Become certified to teach middle and high school students through ASU’s Secondary Education Certificate program in as little as two semesters. Combine courses in your major with education courses and clinical experiences to earn a certificate to teach grades 6-12.

  • Keep your current major
  • Receive support throughout the program from a dedicated advisor, university supervisor, faculty members and a mentor teacher
  • Meet requirements for AZ teacher certification (typically transferable to other states)
  • You may qualify for education-related grants and loan forgiveness programs such as the TEACH grant, especially if you go on to teach math or science in a high-need area. For more information, email

You are eligible for the Secondary Education Certificate program if you have:

  • Content knowledge in one of the following areas (demonstrated with 24 credits of course work in your major or a passing score on the appropriate AZ educator exam): biology, business, chemistry, Chinese (Mandarin), earth and space science, economics, English, French, general science, geography, German, history, mathematics, physics, political science, Spanish or theater
  • The ability to obtain a valid Arizona IVP DPS fingerprint clearance card
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 will be required to progress into your final semester of student teaching
  • Enrolled as a degree-seeking undergraduate or a non-degree-seeking graduate student at ASU
