Biography

Photini A. Spanias is a principal lecturer at the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College. She is currently teaching elementary, special, and bilingual education math methods courses as well as math education courses for pre-service teachers.

Professor Spanias serves as Honors Faculty with Barrett, The Honors College at ASU. She mentors students who take her courses for honors credit, or work on a math-related honors thesis in this role. Professor Spanias is passionate about preparing excellent math teachers and his teaching goals always aim at providing students with inquiry-based, hands-on activities, inspiring and motivating them to perform at their highest potential, and helping them understand the importance of their role as math educators in developing critically thinking young minds. She worked with a technology specialist to design and implement technology infused assignments into the math methods courses. Professor Spanias also worked with the iTeachELLs team on math and science inquiry and problem-solving based lessons and projects.

Research Interests

Guiding Research Questions:

  • How can we best prepare future math teachers who are knowledgeable, confident, and comfortable in their abilities to teach math?
  • How can we use technology resources to enhance students' understanding of mathematical concepts?

Current Research Projects:

  • Dr. Spanias works with technology specialist to design and implement technology infused assignments in our math methods courses.
  • Dr. Spanias works with iTeachELLs team on Math and Science Inquiry and Problem Solving based lessons and projects.
