Margarita Pivovarova

Biography
Margarita Pivovarova applies her training in economics and quantitave methods to better understand education policy issues. Dr. Pivovarova is interested in the design and evaluation of educational policies aimed at raising student achievement in schools.
Since joining the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College in 2013, Dr. Pivovarova has engaged in research of teacher quality and teacher retention. In her second line of inquiry, she studies the relationship between school contexts and academic achievement of immigrant students. Research Interests
Guiding Research Questions:
- What can be done at a policy level to create better schools for students and teachers?
- What are the relationships between education policies and student-, teacher-, and school-level factors?
- What kind of education policies are the most efficient at improving student outcomes in the short and long run?
Current Research Projects:
A recipient of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) research service project award, Dr. Pivovarova, along with Dr. Jeanne Powers, is constructing a longitudinal database to assess teacher mobility within the state of Arizona. Through this research, they will gain insight into factors that influence both teacher mobility and retention.
Dr. Pivovarova has been involved in ongoing research to investigate relationships between immigration policies and student achievement. Dr. Pivovarova analyzes various state policies, including both those states with immigrant friendly policies as well as states with unfavorable immigration policies.
