Juliet Barnett

Biography
Juliet Hart Barnett is an associate professor in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. Her research focuses on effective instruction for students with autism spectrum disorder, quality teacher preparation, and translation of research findings into classroom practice. Her research activities are primarily single-subject design studies where students serve as their own controls in actual classrooms to maximize impact on local students and teachers.
Professor Hart Barnett shares her expertise with pre-service teachers and serves as the faculty advisor for Barrett, The Honors College at ASU. She has published more than 90 peer-reviewed articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, scholarly newsletters, and proceedings in special education, has secured substantial external funding, presented to more than 100 national/international audiences, and is co-author of "Friendship 101: Helping Students Build Social Competence," a book on evidence-based practices in autism.
Professor Hart Barnett also serves as associate editor of the Council for Exceptional Children's Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities Online Journal. An intentional and frequent collaborator in scholarly writing with her students, she is the recipient of the 2017 Teachers College Award for Excellence in Integration of Scholarship and Teaching. She is also the 2020 recipient of CEC's Division on Autism and Developmental Disabilities Research Award.

Research Interests
Guiding Research Questions:
- Which evidence-based practices can best support the academic, social, and behavioral development of students with autism spectrum disorders?
- How can we best support teachers working with children with disabilities to provide an optimal learning environment for students?
- How can we most effectively train classroom teachers to maximize their ability to continue implementing best practices as part of their ongoing instruction?
Current Research Projects:
Dr. Hart Barnett engages in classroom-based research, working with local teachers to improve educational and social outcomes of children with autism spectrum disorders in inclusive class settings. Currently, she is exploring how evidence-based interventions in autism can be applied to students learning in mathematics and science.
Hart Barnett also works with teachers to assess their individual instructional needs as well as the needs of each child. In addition, she examines how technology innovations such as the iPad can be used to teach a range of academic, social, and behavioral skills to students with autism.
