Master of Arts (MA) – Social & Philosophical Foundations

About the program

Education is a social practice dependant on context, policy and culture. It is important for practitioners and schools to critically analyze complex issues such as equity, multiculturalism, high stakes testing, bilingual education, indigenous education rights, affirmative action and school choice. To examine the relationships between education, society, democracy, and globalization the Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education program draws on classic and contemporary thought from the intellectual traditions of Anthropology, History, Philosophy, Sociology, and Linguistics as well as from Comparative, International and Multicultural education.

The Master of Arts degree in Social and Philosophical Foundations of Education is designed for experienced practitioners as well as individuals preparing for doctoral level studies in areas such as the following:

  • Educational Reform and Policy
  • International and Comparative Education
  • Language Rights and Policy as Practice
  • Philosophy of Education
  • Ethnography and Anthropology of Education
  • Sociology of Education
  • American Indian Education Policy
  • Race, Class, Gender in Education

The program is individually tailored to suit the intellectual and research interests of each student with a set of core courses. Opportunities for graduate assistantships are available on a limited basis, usually in the form of teaching and research fellowships.
