Certification Programs - Educational Administration & Supervision

Program Coordinator

The program of Educational Administration and Supervision of Arizona State University recognizes that successful performance by school administrators is dependent upon many factors. It also is aware that there is not universal agreement regarding the proper components of a pre-service preparation program for administrative certification. The "right" program is one which best prepares a given individual to perform competently and successfully in a given administrative or supervisory position. There is agreement within the Department that certification requirements which are closely allied to a competency based emphasis in the preparation program should provide much assistance in this regard. Also, in 1985, the Arizona State Board of Education set forth specific skills to be included in the approved preparation programs for the supervisor, principal and superintendent certificates.

The Department has developed a commitment to the standards-based preparation program which provides for the specified basic skills. The purpose of this approach is, in part, to cause all persons interested in becoming administrators or supervisors to undergo introspections which, in turn, will lead toward the development of personal professional development plans unique to the individual.

The advisement sheets reflect a flexibility of course selection consistent with a standards-based preparation program. Through this type of revision in emphasis and other modifications in the program, the department desires to provide both general and specialized offerings that competent administrators and supervisors need in order to perform their responsibilities adequately. Internship experiences are provided that are designed to meet the particular needs of each student in relation to the certificate he/she is seeking.
