Application process
Applicants should complete an online graduate application. Please note that you will be prompted to create a user login prior to accessing your application. You will also be required to upload your letter of intent (this should be saved to your hard drive so that you can access it when you start your application).
Applicants should submit the following in one envelope to the Graduate Admissions Office, Graduate College, Box 871003, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona 85287-1003, at least two months prior to the desired date of enrollment:
- One copy of official transcripts from every college and university attended (unless your transcripts are from ASU). Official transcripts must be received at the Graduate Admissions Office directly from the institutions attended.
- Application fee.
- GRE scores (Only if your Undergraduate junior/senior gpa is below a 3.0).
In addition, three current letters of recommendation must be sent to the Division of Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Programs Office, Box 871911 Farmer 434, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona 85287-1911.
Advising
Each MEd student is assigned an advisor at the time of his/her admission. The advisor serves as Chair of the student's Graduate Committee. Students should meet with their advisors upon receipt of notification of admission. The Committee Chair advises the student during development of the Program of Study and the culminating activity.
Continuing Student Status
Students admitted for MEd studies are usually enrolled during both fall and spring semesters of each academic year until the courses listed on their Program of Study and the Culminating Activity are completed. Those who fail to enroll for a fall or spring semester must reapply for program admission before continuing their studies. This can be done by completing a ‘re-entry' application at the Graduate Admissions website. (Students who fail to enroll in course work for two or more semesters must complete a ‘degree' application at the same website.)
Students who are not able to enroll for course work during an academic year term may maintain their "Continuing Student" status by enrolling for one semester hour of credit in DCI 595 Continuing Registration.
Program of Study
A minimum of thirty hours of course work approved by the Graduate Committee are required. Additional course work may be required to satisfy deficiencies in the student's previous preparation. The official POS should be approved during the first semester of study. The "Petition to the Graduate College" form is used to make changes in the POS after an approved POS has been filed with the Graduate College . The forms are available on the Graduate College website, in the Division of Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Programs Office, and the Graduate College.
Program of Study Requirements
A minimum of 30 semester hours of credit is required for the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction.
Time Limit
All requirements for the MEd degree must be completed within a six-year time period. Courses completed more than six-years prior to the end of the semester when all course work and the culminating activity for the degree are completed cannot be included in the 30 hours listed on the Program of Study.
Use of Credit Earned Prior to MEd Admission
A maximum of nine (9) hours of credit (non-degree hours) earned prior to MEd program admission may be included in the Program of Study, when approved by the student's Graduate Program Chair.
Transfer of Credit from Other Universities
A maximum of six (6) semester hours of credit earned at other institutions, when approved by the student's Graduate Program Chair, may be included in the 30-semester hour Program of Study. Only resident graduate courses with "A" and "B" grades may be transferred. Courses with the grade of Pass, Credit or Satisfactory cannot be transferred. (A maximum of 12 semester hours of credit may be completed at ASU-West with the student's Graduate Program Chair's prior approval provided classes are not also taken at another institution.)
Graduate courses being considered for transfer must conform to College of Education policy regarding instructor qualifications and number of hours of instruction required for each semester hour of credit.
Correspondence Study Credit
Correspondence study credit cannot be used to satisfy MEd program requirements.
Culminating activity
Each MEd degree candidate will complete an applied project after finishing at least 24 of the 30 semester hours listed on the Program of Study. The student should confer with the Chair of his or her Graduate Program Committee regarding this requirement prior to completing 12 semester hours of course work.
