Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy Education

Master of Arts

The Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction: Literacy Education concentration provides students the opportunity to investigate applied and theoretical issues in literacy education. Students will investigate issues in literacy education including elementary reading and writing, adolescent literacy, children’s literature and digital literacy, and choose a specialization in literacy education or reading endorsement.

Doctor of Philosophy

The Doctor of Philosophy in Learning, Literacies and Technologies is a scholarly enterprise dedicated to high quality, influential research that transforms education in Arizona, nationally and internationally.  

Students will begin researching during their first semester, and continue throughout the four-year program. A transdisciplinary team of scholars led by distinguished faculty members will collaborate with doctoral students, individually and in teams,to design powerful studies, to implement  them in authentic settings, collect and analyze data, write research reports, and present and publish the results.

Undergraduate Programs

  • Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education

    Early Childhood and Early Childhood Special Education

    The program prepares students for certification in early childhood education (birth to age 8 or through grade 3) and early childhood special education (birth to age 5). This degree incorporates early childhood special education, which is the only program of its kind in the state, and in high demand in schools.

  • Educational Studies

    Educational Studies

    The Bachelor of Arts in Education for Educational Studies program prepares students to work with children and youth outside of traditional classrooms.

    Graduates will gain a versatile degree that qualifies them for a variety of career paths working with children and youth in nonprofit or government organizations, private educational or recreational settings, or as entrepreneurs in children and youth oriented fields. This degree is also a good fit for students desiring post-graduate degrees in education or education-related fields. The Educational Studies program does not lead to teacher certification.

  • Elementary Education

    Elementary Education

    The Bachelor of Arts in Education for Elementary Education program is a provisional teacher certification program, leading to full certification in elementary education for grades 1-8.

    The program offers students a firm grounding in academic content, research and best practices integrated with real world classroom experiences. Students engage in field experiences and internships that align with their elementary education academic program.

  • Elementary Education: English as a Second Language /Bilingual Education

    Elementary Education: English as a Second Language /Bilingual Education

    This program gives students a firm grounding in academic content with current research and best practices, accompanied by real-world classroom experiences.

    Students can expect to learn principles of language for minority education, foundations of Structured English Immersion (SEI), global awareness, and diversity in families and communities in multicultural settings, as well as the traditional teacher subjects such as math, language arts, computer literacy and natural science for students that are English language learners.

  • Physical Education

    Physical Education

    The Bachelor of Arts in Education for Physical Education program empowers aspiring teachers with the necessary skills to deliver quality K-12 physical education programs.

    The program is unique in its practice-oriented focus on intensive field experiences, practical application of current knowledge, a field-tested and widely used curriculum and classroom management model, and an emphasis on current technology.

  • Secondary Education

    Secondary Education

    The Bachelor of Arts in Education for Secondary Education prepares students to become educators for youth enrolled in grades 7-12.  To integrate teacher preparation with the Secondary Education requirements for an academic specialization, the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College maintains connections with academic departments across ASU.

  • Special Education and Elementary Education

    Special Education and Elementary Education

    The Bachelor of Arts in in Education for Special Education and Elementary Education is a dual certification program that prepares students to work with children in grades K - 12 who have mild to moderate disabilities, and in general education classrooms in grades 1 - 8.

  • Alternative Pathways to Teacher Certification

    Alternative Pathways to Teacher Certification

    The Mary Lou Fulton teachers College offers the Induction, Master of Education and Arizona Teacher Certification (InMAC) program as an alternative pathway to teacher certification. Participants are full time teachers of record on the Teaching Intern Certificate from the Arizona Department of Education while completing classes for the M.Ed. and certification one night a week at the Downtown Phoenix campus.

    The Master of Education in Educational Technology emphasizes the design, development, implementation and management of educational technology applications in learning settings.

    Secondary Education

    The Master of Education in Secondary Education program offers three options for students to earn a master’s degree and Arizona teacher certification. This program is for those who want to become certified to teach grades 7-12 in the public schools and already have a bachelor’s degree in any field and at least 24 college credits in math, science, english, history, fine arts or foreign language.
