About the program

teacher As the most influential person in the professional development of a pre-service teacher, the mentor teacher has a strong impact on a student teacher's professional career. To provide the highest quality of mentoring possible, it is essential for mentors to be knowledgeable and proficient in those skills necessary to support and guide pre-service teachers.

Eligilibity for mentor teachers:

As a mentor teacher for an ASU student teacher, you are eligible for either a stipend or an in-state tuition waiver for yourself only at ASU. The amount of the stipend or the value of the tuition waiver will depend on the length of time the student teacher was in your classroom.

  • Choices for Honorarium
  • Stipend
If you select the stipend option, the checks are processed through the accounts payable department at ASU and the normal processing time is 8-10 weeks after all student teaching grades are posted.

    Tuition Waiver
If you select the tuition waiver option, you will receive an authorization letter. This authorization letter will give you specific instructions on the use of the in-state tuition waiver. The waiver is for tuition only; it will not cover special fees for financial aid, etc. The waiver will have a ending period. Under federal law, ASU is required to report to the IRS the value of the tuition waiver on form 1099-MISC. You will complete a Sub W-9 when you exercise your right to use the tuition waiver. You may want to consult with your tax adviser about the additional taxable income prior to completing your individual income tax return. For a value of the tuition waiver, please refer to the following website: http://asu.edu/sbs/FallGraduate.htm.

    Process
You must submit to ASU 2 forms:
    1. Mentor Teacher Honorarium Form and
    2. Substitute W-9
Both forms must be completed, signed and submitted directly to ASU. You can fax them to 480-965-1090 or mail them to Linda Jaacks at PO Box 871111, Tempe, AZ 85287-1111. Fax or mail the forms within your student teacher’s first weeks so ASU has time to process the paperwork. Failure to complete these forms in a timely manner could result in non-payment.
