Sample Institute Schedule
Thursday
- 9am–12pm
- Welcome and Orientation to the Institute
The use of "Council" for group deliberations and the making of a Talking Stick to facilitate Council. (Done in small groups).
Who am I as an ethics thinker?: Creating a personal ethics profile. (Done in small groups)
- 12pm–12:30pm
- Lunch
- 12:45pm–4pm
- Learning about various Ethical Systems (Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, virtue ethics, care ethics, communitarianism). (Group as a whole)
Examining ethical dilemmas in your own school in reference to the 5 systems. (Done in small groups.)
Use Council on one or two of the dilemmas distilled through the ethical systems to deliberate responses to the dilemmas. (Done in small groups)
Debrief the afternoon systems work. (Group as a whole)

- Break
- 4:15pm–5pm
- Dinner (provided by Institute)
- 5:15pm–7pm
- Humilty ethics: a way of being with each other in ethical relationship. (Group as a whole)
Friday
- 9am–12pm
- Alternative ways of thinking about ethics for developing a vision of an ethical life: metaphors and aesthetic thinking. (Done in small groups)
- 12pm–1pm
- Working lunch: read handouts on how to use a case study.
- 1pm–2:30pm
- Case studies of ethical dilemmas in the disciplines as course content (done in small groups)
- 2:30pm–4pm
- Wrap-up (Group as a whole):
"How can I use what we've done in my classroom? What do I still need to know?"
Ideas for grant applications (for Lincoln Center and other places).
Written evaluation.
