Garth BlackhamASU Emeritus Professor Garth J Blackham, a renowned counseling psychology theorist, died on July 24, 2009. He was 82.

Blackham began working at Arizona State University in 1962 after working as a school psychologist for eight years. After only four years, he was promoted from associate professor to full professor in counseling education. He was a well regarded scholar and researcher, as much as he was dedicated to student advisement, development, and enrichment. His teaching evaluations would rank top among faculty from his program year and year, which was one of his proudest achievements. He prided himself on quality doctoral dissertations, not just the number of students he chaired. He believed in making a difference in each student’s life.

He had served as president of the Arizona Psychological Association (AZPA) in 1976. He later received the Outstanding State Psychologist Award from AZPA. In 1985, he was honored as an Outstanding Faculty Member by the College of Education.

After 27 years of dedication to the College of Education and ASU, Blackham retired in 1989.
