Affirmative Action Philosophy Statement
In order to help "transform the education of today into the education needed tomorrow in guiding all learners to high standards of learning and development in the complex social settings of Arizona, the Southwest and the nation," as articulated in the Vision, Mission, and Goals of the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education, the College affirms the importance of diversity. The College is committed to actively recruiting, admitting, and retaining a diverse student body in order to serve ASU's mission to provide access and opportunity to all students, particularly those from underrepresented groups. The College seeks to educate students for life and work in diverse local and global settings, as well as ensure educational equity and excellence for all students and foster understanding of cultural and linguistic literacies.
The Fulton College aspires to support students, staff, and faculty who will be able to address the challenge of diversity in a variety of school, education, and community contexts. Based on vast experience with schools and other educational settings in Arizona and the nation, it is the College's judgment that significant benefits flow from diverse classroom settings and the interactions of diverse students, faculty, and staff. Accordingly, the College affirms its commitment to the importance of actively recruiting, retaining, and advancing diverse members of the staff and faculty. Vital and challenging educational environments will best prepare students to excel as teachers, educators, and other professionals who serve diverse student populations.
Affirmative Action Policy Statement
Based on the educational mission of the Mary Lou Fulton College of Education at Arizona State University, the College is committed to equality of educational opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students and equal employment opportunity for faculty and staff members. We follow ASU's definition of affirmative action:"Those positive steps taken by an employer to ensure the provision of equal opportunity. Affirmative action regulations cover minority persons, women, persons with disabilities, Vietnam-era veterans, and special disabled veterans" so that we can have a diverse student body that creates educational benefits for all students. We also follow ASU's overall nondiscrimination policy: "no applicant is discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, citizenship, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability, Vietnam era veteran status, or special disabled veteran status" (ACDW 505-04: Recruitment/Appointment Policy and Procedures).
Not only is the College dedicated to nondiscrimination, but it is also dedicated to a comprehensive program of Affirmative Action to insure access, fairness, and equality in admissions, educational programs and related activities for people of color; people in poverty and low-income people; women; persons with disabilities; religious minorities; gay, lesbian, and transgendered people; age minorities; and veterans, as well as the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body for all students. The College educates future teachers, educational administrators, counselors, school psychologists, researchers, and others who need to be exposed to a variety of ideas, cultures, beliefs and values in order for them to do good work and contribute fully to enhancing the educational system in our culturally diverse state and in our democratic society as a whole. As such, the College uses affirmative action in admissions and hiring because it is important, not only to help us diversity our students, faculty, and staff, but also because it is the right and just thing to do. Thus, the College is committed to this policy because it contributes to the fulfillment of its mission and goals.
